FCC and Censorship

by on Jan.07, 2005, under Uncategorized

Adam Penenberg’s article on wired.com today does a grand job of highlighting one of the FCC’s major problems. I’m not sure that I would go as far as to suggest that they be disbanded entirely but I agree strongly that far too much focus appears to be being put into sanitising broadcast media of any form of content that could be considered even vaguely sexual (see the multitude of reports following Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction”) while violence is pretty much ignored.
As Mr. Penenberg points out, people have the choice to change channel or turn the TV off if they are offended by something. They should exercise this option rather than continue to whine about content that the vast majority of people don’t consider inappropriate and leave the FCC to get on with its jobs aside from content regulation.
