Think DEET doesn’t work?

by on Jun.04, 2007, under Uncategorized

I’ve always been rather skeptical of the efficacy of insect repellents. I use them the vast majority of the time when I go out around the house since I know we have a high number of nasty, biting bugs but regardless, I always end up with a couple of bites. When I went out last weekend to do some bug photography down on the wildflower-covered septic field and forgot to splash myself with DEET, I wasn’t too worried. Shortly after returning about 30 minutes later, though, I discovered that the repellent does apparently work since, rather than the 2 or 3 bites I would normally expect, I had been dinner for 60 (yes, I counted them) chiggers (“berry bugs” to any Scots reading this). I can safely say, therefore, that DEET spray is somewhere in the order of 96% effective. I can also say that I will not be forgetting to use it again in the future – a week later I am still itching.
Despite the bites, the photography was fun and I got several photos that I am very happy with.
