Favourite Photos of 2008

by on Jan.03, 2009, under Photography

In keeping with all the “Best Of” and “Review of the Year” articles and posts going around just now, here’s my top 10 list of photographs I’ve posted in 2008. Starting at the top:

1. Old Filling Station, Driftwood Texas
This picture takes the number 1 spot since I’m delighted with the way it turned out. Both the colour and the texture are exactly as I wanted them to be and I am very keen on the low angle, super-wide-lens composition. It made the editor’s final 100 cut a the PCPhoto magazine competition (the results of which have yet to be announced). Overall, this is my top pick for the year.

2nd equal – All the rest
I was intending to rank the remaining shots but I like them all so I will leave the 2-10 ranking job to the reader.

These two were taken in the Wild West Store in Wimberley, a location that I visited a couple of times during the year. The huge array of vintage cowboy boots and other western paraphernalia was fascinating and offered some great composition opportunities.

Moving back into downtown Austin, a photo walk with the Austin Photography Group yielded the first two of these images while a drizzly day in November gave me an opportunity to shoot some interiors at the Driskill Hotel. Again, I love the perspective that the Sigma 10-20mm gives me on these well-known Austin landmarks.

A couple more esoteric photos come up next. The first shot of a seagull taken off the back of a boat while taking a South Padre Island dolphin watching tour was salvaged from another grey, drizzly day whereas the second shot was taken at a recent wedding. I like both for their compositional simplicity.

Soaring Red Laces

The last two images are really cheats. The originals were taken in 2007 and 2004 respectively but, since I processed and posted these versions in 2008 and since I love the results, I am considering them eligible for this year’s Hot List 🙂

Agua Through The Archway Hamilton Pool (final)

All-in-all, I reckon this has been my best photography year for quite some time. I’m increasingly happy with the HDRs I am producing so, before complacency sets it, will be forcing myself to try new things in 2009.

Happy New Year to all!

I was within a stone’s throw of Hamilton pool today. Went out mountain biking at Reimer’s Ranch… It was a good time, but unfortunately there wasn’t any time to get the camera out….
