Waiting on Congress Bridge
by Dave Wilson on Aug.10, 2009, under Photography
I took this photo about a month ago while out with a couple of friends trying to get pictures of the bats leaving Congress Avenue bridge for the night. If you’ve not seen this, it’s a pretty spectacular sight – a ribbon of around 1 million Mexican Free Tail bats leave their perches and head east at sunset to spend the night putting a dent in the Central Texas mosquito population.
Unfortunately, on this particular night, the bats decided to leave early so when we arrived 20 minutes before sunset, the majority had already gone and we missed the spectacle. While hanging around, though, I got a few good pictures of the bridge. This is definitely my favourite of the night and is now high in my personal Top 10 images for the year. Apparently others like it too since it was voted Photo of the Month at last night’s meeting of the Austin Photography Group.
