A Vote to Help FIRST

by on Oct.07, 2009, under Photography

If you read this blog, you are probably aware that I am a supporter of, and great believer in the message sent by, Dean Kamen’s FIRST organisation which promotes science and engineering through robotics competitions in schools. I received the following message from FIRST today and am passing it on in the hope that other readers will vote and help them towards some serious funding from Google.

A Vote to help FIRST!

You may be familiar with Google’s Project 10^100 (Project 10 to the 100) where Google opened up a suggestion box for ways to solve world problems that fell into different categories. Well, a FIRST’s team suggestion was picked to go into a small group of only 67 selected suggestions out of the over 150,000 suggestions received. Grouped into 16 categories, these suggestions are now up for final voting by the world! Of these 16 categories, up to five categories will be selected as winners of the $10,000,000 prize money – which will be split among them (so $2 million per category).

Go to and cast your vote for this category which involves using funds to spread FIRST to more students and schools around the world!

Voting ends on Thursday, October 8th — so please help by voting soon! And if you can encourage others to vote as well – that would be great!

Communion Silverware, Central Presbyterian

by on Oct.07, 2009, under Photography

The photography group at Central Presbyterian Church is currently hard at work pulling together pictures of church life for a sermon on November 15th which is to be given over the top of a slideshow. As a result, 3 or 4 of us have been bringing photo equipment to church for the last month or so and shooting pictures of various Sunday School classes and fellowship activities.

When my official shooting obligation for a given Sunday is in the bag, I’ve tended to head back to the sanctuary and shoot detail shots that we can use between the smiling kids and coffee drinking adults. This is one from last Sunday that I’m particularly happy with. The stained glass reflections in the communion silverware were wonderful. You can find another similar shot over on the photoblog too.
